The Blood Clans

The courts have emerged after years of secrecy and strict control by the stronger members to prevent anarchy and chaos. Resources must be nurtured after all. This often resulted in schisms within the courts themselves, or factions that people can claim allegience to. They each have their advantages and disadvantages, and wise blood kin tend to at least have favors owed through the various factions if possible to ensure the least number of faction related enemies.

Red Court: The court of blood, these are the traditional vampyre as told by Brahm Stoker. They thrive on, and work through, blood. Fangs are sharp and prominent, though retractable for better blending. Red court, if feeding regularly, exude a vitality and charisma that can be hard to resist. They may not be the most gorgeous creatures at the ball but they arrest attention regardless. If they control magic they exercise it through blood charms and hard study; a good red court mage is often more the wizard in the tower type while a bad one tends toward cult leadership.

Life span of a Red Court vampire is limitless when well fed and not hunted, though in times of famine older vampires may enter a hibernation state to emerge decades after they entered sleep. They are 'alive' in every sense of the word, able to procreate with each other and with other sentient beings, though rarely with no more than one or two births in a century. See Black Court entries for cases of ill fed and ailing Red Court.

White Court: The court of essence, the most accurate historical recordings are actually biblical. As a group that feeds on emotion and the energy of emotion, many white court vampires fall easily into the quick feeding of the sex trade. Sex being a heady meal of tangled emotions they can encourage and sip from. Fangs are dainty and nearly unnoticeable as they are not required for feeding and instead are often used to share the 'high' of feeding with a donor to encourage repeat customers. White Court members are almost to a soul possessed of some characteristic of 'beauty' defined by the nearby sentient races. They range from breathtaking models of charisma to painfully perfect in rare cases. There are more cases of refined outliers in the White Court than any other court though, ranging from saints that have been fed by the feeling of gratitude of their flock, to warlords that thrive on the swell of fear that sweeps across the land. Mages in this group are rare, and tend to specialize in manipulation.

Life span of a White Court vampire is limitless when well fed and not hunted, though they lack the hibernation phase of Red Court members. They are alive in every sense of the word able to procreate with each other and other sentient races rather easily, though White Bloodlines, diluted, do little more than impart beauty beyond the third generation and members must breed back into a pure bloodline. See Black Court entry for cases of ill fed and ailing White Court.

Black Court: Many noted historians in the various courts and factions claim the Black Court to be the original strain of vampires. These members are strong and nearly unstoppable when rampaging as death is just a phase for them. Their fangs are prominent and always present, closer to wolf or bear fangs than other tooth types. They feed on flesh, bone, and spirit and are often found in graveyards and morgues devouring the lost and unknown. When 'living' the flesh and spirit they devour allows them to assume the memories and form of the one consumed for a time, the effect lasting until a new feeding or until the bones of the previous corpse are entirely eaten. When 'dead' feedings restore higher thinking as well as impart magical ability. Almost every black court member has an aptitude for magic, many that choose not to hunt live prey use spells to keep curious people away from their homes and to erase the minds of young humans poking at graveyards. For those hunting live prey the magical applications are nearly limitless and bound only by the strength of those consumed to power spells.

Unlike other courts, the Black Court has a definite 'life span', growing and aging. When alive they can procreate, though it is a hardship to bear children with their own court, prefering instead to breed with red or white court, rarely other sentients. When a Black Court member ages to death or dies due to damage, they enter their unlife phase, stronger in magic and far harder to bled without proper spells. They can no longer procreate normally, they can conceive, in a sense, creating seeds or pods that are kept secretly in spell cloths until a large enough sacrifice of spirits and flesh can be made. Children 'born' of the death rites of dead Black Court are NOT black court, they are often twisted, monstrous ideas made flesh and most historical 'monsters' are actually children of the black Court, obedient and loving to their parents but rarely kind to other beings (though there are exceptions).

The older a dead Vlack Court member grows, the less likely they are to move easily, instead feeding through slaves and surrigates. Biting and killing a living creature causes a black touched one to rise, and through these puppets the masters can consume flesh safely. The greatest recorded Black Court members have been liche kings and Vaudun Zombeh godlings.

Further evidence of the Black Bloodlines being the 'original' strains reside in ill members of the other two courts. Starved or sick individuals will often become unable to stomach their original sustenance and will begin to grow fangs suited to hunting. If not fed and counseled properly these members often go insane and rampage as they fall into the death state i\of Black Court members, though until they have time to learn a new way of life 'fallen' red or white members are far easier to kill.

Dead Black Court members can no longer repair their bodies by consuming flesh, though energy and essence start to replace physical shells, meaning Black members rat away, zombie like, but can be seen as corpses, or floating skeletons or...etc.

Mate Lock Symptoms
A Court member mate locking may display any of the following:
~Obsession
~Over Protectiveness
~Increased appetite
~Limited ability to consider other targets
~Limited attention span
~Territorial urges
~Hunting Urges
~Excessive Marking
~Nesting instincts
~Urge to reduce competition

Instinct in the case of mate locking is to isolate and revel in a bond making life suddenly new and appealing. This can be problematic in most cases as it can lead to fully vampire couples sharing kills to the point of rapid decline in available food species as well as killing in general which can be problematic to detection.

Mixed couples often result in stalking behavior as the vampire member of the bond works to become the only thing in a mate's life. Naturally this is a dangerous aspect for the non-vampire mate as obsession and jealousies can lead to attacks attempts to turn said mate against their will. Often mate bound vampires who lock to a non-court member refuse to eat or properly hunt outside the kills needed to 'protect' their mate, as they only taste they desire is that of their mate. While mate bond energies are far more sustaining than normal feeding, not all mates can sustain the draw necessary to keep a vampire mate healthy and sane. Older vampires are encouraged to intercede and train mixed mated pairs in proper and safe feeding techniques. Most cases of interspecies locking end in tragedy before the bond can be noted by outsiders though, given the desire to isolate.

Ideally court members lock to other court members in complimentary fashions, though the feeding cycles can boost and distract the new pair immensely, they will at least not drain their partners to death. Previously social feeders are rarely able to return to such habits though and this may cause disruption of power balances in factions.
