Did you know you were my hero?

Who: Orchid and Jaeger
When: Age six or so.
What: Two children in an orphanage are lonely.

She eyed her fingers a long moment, liking how they were staying purple this time. She liked when she was purple, it felt...right. And the doctors the orphanage took them to said her skin seemed to hold more and more chromatophores as she aged. Soon, no doubt, she'd stay purple. She liked that idea. "Better?" she asked softly, fingers soothing in circles along Jaeger's temples.

They were in the attic, a place they went when it was raining so it was less intelligent to sneak out officially. The sound of rain was obvious up here, a pounding wash that made her sigh and breath deeply, "spring rains are here..." she crooned softly, fingers still working. "I missed them..." Some days it seemed there just wasn't enough water in the world, or her room. Jaeger was working on something to fix that though, and the doctors were tired of seeing her for dehydration.

Perhaps it was her meds, those seemed to have a dehydrating effect, and they weren't helping Jaeger's headaches much honestly. "Can you open the shutters?" she asked him softly, tucking a stolen blanket around him tighter. It would get cold with the slats open but the damp would be so nice...

...she hated to ask him to use his powers when he had a headache but if she didn't give his brain a path for the use it would start throwing things around and that...

...that didn't seem right honestly. But they managed yes, they tried to test their powers together instead of in labs because labs...

...labs scared her. And she couldn't really tell people WHY. She didn't need them to decide she was properly crazy because she had some very...bad memories in her head. "And I don't think we're eating enough," she admitted quietly. "We're burning too many calories when we use our powers, could be part if the headaches. I'll start growing things for us in a corner plot..."

"Some people cannot handle what we are. Its not as simple as all that." He sighed.

"Nor is her life with her hands tied and everyone else already treats her very poorly."

"I'm trying to deal with that. Well... help but... I can't do that with lab sniffers on payroll here... and there is one..." He sighed.

"If you really wanted to help you'd adopt Jaeger instead of just kidnap him." Because kids could be...blunt. Very blunt. "Or you'd hand over the evidence Jaeger and I can't and then they wouldn't be able to pretend to be doctors anymore."

"You'll get the evidence... but I am a world walker. I can't stay here long." He noted.

"You're just a meddler then. You're shiny and special and you'll get Jaeger's hopes up about maybe you knowing his parents or leaving this world with you and then he'll hurt more."

"No, I've made him no such promises." He shook his head. "We talked... we helped with his headaches... he threw a toy ship at my friend... but he knows what we can and can't do for him. This is... not an easy road... and I'm sorry its not... you two deserve things easy for a while." He sighed.

"You say that like children don't get their hopes up about fairy tale endings," the head mistress noted hollowly. Oh the poor children...

"Jaeger's too angry to be that rational," Orchid agreed.

"He informed us, fairytales are for sissies and he's not a "goddamn sissy"." He laughed.

"I'm glad you think that's funny," Orchid noted stiffly.

"Orchid," the head mistress noted gently. It wasn't the man's fault he didn't know just how damaged a statement that was from an orphan. Most wouldn't.

"Look..." HE sighed. "I know how much pain there is... I do, and we're doing... what we can to help it. I promise you that." he noted stepping outside and letting the disguise fall as a whole given they weren't being recorded anymore.

The mistress...took that in stride yes, though her lips narrowed a touch? "He's going to be be shattered by this," she noted softly.

"He already hates everything in this world," Orchid agreed, shivering a moment.

"He's seen my face." He noted.

"Which makes it worse," Orchid noted. "It means someone who could be him later can't and won't tell him about the family he knows he has, or find them. Maybe that means in the future he never finds them so he can't tell his kid self about it at all."

"I'm clearly not the same person. He's human, I am not." He blinked. "I don't think he's as upset about all this as you seem to think he is..." He blinked.

"YOU'RE shielded, he doesn't know how and EVERYTHING hurts him. Everything. And then he lashes out."

"Yes well most of that is the drugs..." He sighed softly. "They're were designed to cause him to lose control. Likely so they could take him."

"But it's always been that way? Even before he got prescriptions."

"But not as bad?"

She considered that then shrugged, "he used to be able to forgive easier, now he doesn't. He stays angry," she admitted.

"Ah, so number of things six, sociopathic tendencies, and drugs."

"...oh," she noted quietly, wilting a little.

"What's wrong?"

"...I can't fix that. It's my job and I can't."

"Oh honey," the mistress sighed. "You aren't responsible for his life."

"Time fixes most of it." He noted. "Lack of... his mother's guidance on how to act like an actual person is showing right now.. but it will level out."
